I giggled when I heard Tomi Lahren had been suspended from her show "The Blaze." No that's not entirely true. I giggled when I heard the reason Tomi Lahren was suspended from her show on Fox News. For those who missed the news, Lahren recently appeared on "The View" where she shared her thoughts on abortion.
"I'm pro choice and here's why: I am a constitutional--someone that loves the constitution--I am for someone who's for limited government and so I can't sit here and be a hypocrite and say I'm for limited government but I think that the government should decide what women do with their bodies. I can sit here and say that as a Republican. And I can say I'm for limited government so stay out of my guns and stay out of my body as well."
What a pleasant surprise. Sadly, the folks at Fox who employ Tomi didn't find the news so delightful. Tomi's stance was said to have caused tension between her and her coworkers. And after that, we learned that Tomi had been suspended for a week. Glenn Beck, founder of the "The Blaze" addressed the controversy on his radio show on Monday saying that while he disagreed with Tomi's stance, it was not the reason for her suspension.
“First of all, we have a whole bunch of different kinds of people that work here…If you’re pro-choice, you can have a job at The Blaze,” he said. "I would disagree that you’re a hypocrite if you want limited government and yet you want the government to protect life of the unborn. It’s very, very clear. But it takes intellectual honesty, and it takes a willingness to actually think these things through and to do more than just read Twitter or Facebook to get your news and your political opinions.”
Glenn Beck doesn't owe anyone an explanation for Tomi's suspension but with timing this coincidental, he should have said a bit more than he did because no one believes him and this defensive statement. I've written before that perhaps one of the most tragic things about Tomi Lahren's ascent is the fact that she believes its of her own doing. Never once did she consider that she was a pawn for the conservative, White, male, patriarchal agenda. And as a pawn, if you deviate from the script, there will be consequences. And after spending so much time speaking ill of other disenfranchised groups, it was only a matter of time before her identity as a woman would be attacked. And that time is now. And while I would say there is something pathetic about her learning this lesson in this way, there's also a large part of it that feels like retribution. Naturally, I'm not the only one who felt like this. See what the good folks on Twitter had to say about Ms. Lahren and her suspension. Veronica Wells is the culture editor at MadameNoire.com.
