A couple of weeks ago, we reported that our former First Lady, Michelle Obama, would be making an appearance on the Fox show, Master Chef Junior.
This past Thursday, we got to see that episode. 11-year-old Justise Mayberry won the cooking challenge with her pan-seared shrimp and vegetables from the White House garden. What was particularly special about it was the fact that the the 9-year-old winner of the competition
Justise Mayberry won the cooking challenge with her pan-seared shrimp with vegetables from the White House garden. And as a result of her win Justise was invited not only to the White House’s Kid State Dinner, she was also given the opportunity to interview Mrs. Obama.
Justise Mayberry: “What pushed you to create the Kid State Dinner?”
Michelle Obama: That’s a good question. You know, here at the White House, we do state dinners for heads of state all the time. And usually, they’re grown up affairs. They’re very fussy and stuffy and we have entertainment and we serve wonderful food. And I sort of thought, we should do something like this for kids, right?
JM: What advice would you have for me and my other kid chefs out there?
MO: There is nothing more important that you can do for yourself than to get an education. Doing your best not only in the kitchen but you gotta be your best in the classrooms. I want you all to keep pushing and preparing yourself for college and doing well. And the last thing I would tell you do to do is to use your voice and help others. Cuz a lot of kids don’t know how important it is to eat healthy. So you guys have to be our ambassadors and introduce them to new vegetables and fruits. That would be my advice.
