Over the weekend we told you that Joni Sledge, one of the founding members of popular ’70s girl group Sister Sledge, passed away on Friday after being found unresponsive in her home in Phoenix.
The singer was 60 years old, leaving behind her beloved sisters, as well as an adult son named Thaddeus. While speaking on the news with fans on Saturday, Sister Sledge, known for “We Are Family,” “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and many other classics, put out this statement via Facebook:
“Yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We are saddened to inform you that our dear sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin, Joni passed away yesterday. Please pray for us as we weep for this loss. We do know that she is now eternally with Our Lord.”
In a new statement issued Wednesday, the Sledge family stated that Joni passed away from “natural causes which arose from complications from a pre-existing condition.” The group’s publicist, Biff Warren, originally said that Joni hadn’t been ill prior to her death, and the family didn’t go into further detail about what that pre-existing condition was. Instead, they spoke fondly of Joni in the rest of the statement.
“Sister Sledge, Debbie Sledge, Kim Sledge, and family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support to our family during this time of great loss in the wake of the transition into eternity of our beloved sister and musical icon, Joni Sledge. Our Joni was a beautiful person, a phenomenal artist and producer, a brilliant business woman and a powerhouse. Her greatest love and joy was her son Thaddeus (whom we are all very proud of), and performing live with her family.”
