Last July, actress Tatyana Ali sued Warner Bros. and Telepictures, claiming that the idea for The Real was stolen from her. As we told you last year, she reportedly pitched an idea for a celebrity-hosted program that catered to younger women. It was to be “a unique and innovative format, which featured an eclectic group of engaging female celebrity hosts, each aged within their 20’s and 30’s … designed to pique the interest of the younger side of the mid-life/mid-career female population and featured a variety of contemporary discussion topics in a relaxed and informal setting,” per the court papers.

Despite her efforts to be compensated for her idea (the damages were unspecified), and to also collect “designated percentages of the proceeds resulting from the past, current and future production” of the series, a judge in Los Angeles Superior Court dismissed her lawsuit today. It was ruled, according to Deadline, that “the trade secret laws upon which the actress made part of her claim does not protect ideas. Information that would be protected as trade secrets — formulas, methods, techniques and the like — were not claimed by Ali.”
She may have been disappointed to see a concept she felt she brought to life become a huge hit for Fox, but reportedly, she voluntarily revealed the talk show idea and didn’t provide “facts or concrete information protectable as a trade secret.” And considering the idea was just a young woman’s version of an already successful show, The View, we didn’t really see her getting broke off either.
So while Loni Love, Jeannie Mai, Tamera Mowry and Adrienne Bailon will continue to collect their checks from the folks at Warner Bros. and Telepictures, Ali will have to collect her money elsewhere.
