It seems like Harriet Tubman’s spirit is ready to be celebrated. She’s going to be portrayed on the brilliant show “Underground,” she’s set to be featured on the $20 bill and now, she’s going to be the subject of a new film titled, simply, Harriet.
The biopic on the famous revolutionary and abolitionist will feature Tony award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo, known stateside, for her role in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple. Seith Mann and Gregory Allen Howard, two Black men, will direct and script the project.
Most of us know that Tubman helped hundreds of slaves escape from the horrors of slavery. But not as many of us realize that she worked as a spy for the Union during the Civil War, helping to free hundreds more. And as if that weren’t enough, she also advocated for the women’s right to vote.
The project is being co-financed by Marco, New Balloon, and Stay Gold Features. Debra Martin Chase, the Black woman behind, Sparkle, The Princess Diaries, The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants and Just Wright.
Before we get a chance to see Erivo in this project, we’ll likely see her at the Grammys this weekend because she and her cast are nominated for the Best Musical Theater Album. She is also set to perform the Memoriam tribute with John Legend. Her other film projects include a StevenMcQueen-directed thriller called Windows, starring Viola Davis and André Holland from Moonlight.
