Quarter size or dime size, that’s all I know when it comes to rationing out skincare products. But the real question is: How much of our skincare products should we actually be using? How much is too much and who much is too little?
Well, thankfully the ladies over at Seventeen decided to seek out this answer for the rest of us. To make sure they got the best answers possible, they reached out to Dove Dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba for the ultimate pro tips on how much of your products you should use and how to get the most of them all while saving money.
When it comes to cleansing the face (day and night), Dr. Barba recommends “one pump, or the size of a mini candy bar.” She also shared that you should use a “very gentle cleanser that won’t dry out your skin” in the morning and a “foaming cleanser that removes all your makeup, and also gently exfoliates dead skin cells so that other products (like lotion and serum) can penetrate better.”
Although you should use sunscreen year-round, it’s definitely needed to protect your skin from the harsh sun rays that come during the summertime. And according to Dr. Barba, most people don’t use the product enough nor do they reapply it as often as they should. “In general, you are better off if you apply more rather than less,” she explained. “If you’re going to be outside in the sun, use a Hershey kiss-size amount all over your face, up to the hair line, on your nose, lips, under the nose, top of ears and the space between the nose and upper lips. If you spend most of your time indoors, it’s fine to wear makeup with SPF built into it.”
