If 2015-2016 was the year of Black Girl Magic, 2016-2017 has become the year Black men and women basically decided, you gone get all this blackness today and if you don’t like it, IDGAF.
To capture this glorious moment in time, new digital brand Cassius debuted the First Supper of the Unapologetics to mark their June issue, featuring a “tribe of cultural badasses throughout time.”
The IDGAFs, as they’ve also been dubbed, on the cover include Issa Rae, Tyler the Creator, Rihanna, J.Cole, Donald Glover, Kanye West, Willow and Jaden Smith, Malcolm X, Teyana Taylor, Colin Kaepernick, Chance the Rapper, Beyoncé, Solange, Nina Simone, Janelle Monae, Cardi B, Jessie Williams, Zendaya, Laverne Cox, Ava DuVernay, Amber Rose, Kendrick Lamar, Assata Shakur, Harriet Tubman, RuPaul, Big Freedia, Common, and Q-Tip.
“When CASSIUS says ‘The I Don’t Give a F-cks,’ we’re talking about the brave ones—the ones who aren’t without cares, but are without reason to abide by rules written by people who don’t believe in their right to be free, Black and fully-realized,” wrote Jamilah Lemieux, Vice President of News and Men’s Programming at Interactive One who helped launch Cassius in May.
“CASSIUS pays homage to the creative disruptors, the ones shaking the proverbial table simply by the virtue of being themselves. The free Black folk who are more likely to say “F-ck the police” than “F-ck your couch,” while intentionally making space for others to follow in their footsteps.”
Take a look at how the cover came to be in the video below and head over to Cassiuslife.com for more insights from the editors on the monumental boldness of these unapologetic Black entertainers.
