Like Solange said on “A Seat at the Table,” there are just some things that are for us and “Dear White People” — the movie and the Netflix series — are definitely two of those things; hence Justin Simien’s nonchalance toward certain people’s issue with the concept.
We had a chance to chat with the director who brought the film from one-hour feature to 10-episode series, and he spoke to the significance of the backlash to the series and his hope that it opens peoples’s eyes to a subculture some like to pretend doesn’t exist.
